Finished is not found: what a polished app with no users taught us

DASPR is a personal-finance app with a single idea: instead of budgets, categories and bank logins, it gives you one number every day, how much you can safely spend, and asks you to record each purchase yourself so that awareness, not tracking, changes your behavior. It shipped on iOS and Android from one codebase. It is privacy-first by architecture, because it never touches a bank. It is a finished, polished product with its own website.

It did not find an audience.

We include it on this site, as a case study, because it is true and because what it taught us is more useful to a client than another success story would be.

“Different” is not the same as “findable”. DASPR’s model is unusual and, we still think, right. But unusual is not a distribution channel. Personal finance is one of the most crowded categories in both app stores; a new entrant with a contrarian idea and no channel is invisible regardless of quality. We had designed the product carefully and the route to users hardly at all.

Positioning is a product decision, not a marketing one. After DASPR, we repositioned FoodGrader from “personalized nutrition”, which describes everything and therefore nothing, to a scanner built for people managing IBS on a low-FODMAP plan. Same capability, different promise, and suddenly a clear person to build for, a clear place to find them, and a clear reason for them to recommend it. The repositioning was worth more than any feature we could have added.

Start from the pain, not the technology. MorphStreet was built the other way round from DASPR. It began with a specific person, a tradesperson who misses calls because they are doing the work, and a specific, expensive pain, jobs lost to voicemail. The capability followed the pain. That ordering is now how we approach every project.

A discovery phase is cheap insurance. The failure mode with DASPR was not technical. Two weeks spent on who exactly the product was for and how they would find it would have changed the build or stopped it. That is why every Novarki engagement starts with a discovery sprint, and why we will push on positioning and channel before features when a client is early.

DASPR still works. It still has the design we believe in. And it sits on this site as a reminder, to us as much as to anyone, that shipping is necessary and not sufficient.
